What is a geodesic dome?

A dome made from a network of triangles, which spreads load across the whole frame. Buckminster Fuller made the design famous in the 1960s.

Our Geo Domes use that frame with a tensioned cover over the top. The result is a strong, light structure that suits glamping stays, studios and creative spaces.

How much does a geodesic dome cost in NZ?

$17,990 to $32,990 NZD ex GST, as shown on our NZ Geo Dome page on 26 October 2026.

What's included with a Geo Dome?

Everything above the base.

  • Hot-dip galvanised steel frame, black or white
  • 900 GSM double-coated PVC cover in your choice of colour, with a matte finish available
  • Insulated canvas interior lining, backed with a double layer of aluminium air cell insulation
  • Double-glazed front door with frosted glass and an aluminium frame
  • A large removable clear panoramic section covering about a third of the dome
  • Two opening porthole windows with insect screens
  • A solar ventilation fan that needs no separate power
  • Tailored curtains for the panoramic window
  • A keypad smart lock or a standard key lock
  • The cover tensioning system, hardware and fixings

The clear panoramic section can discolour after a few years, which is why it's removable: you replace that section on its own.

What options can you add?

Extra windows, extra solar vents and the double-glazed glass front.

The glass front is a paid option, priced on quotation. Ask for it with your quote.

Which size dome should you choose?

5m to 6m for a studio or a couple's stay. 7m to 8m for room to move or a bathroom inside. 9m to 10m for a family space or a shared lounge.

Think about furniture under the curve: the walls slope from the floor, so the usable space near the edge is lower than in the middle.

Geodesic dome or yurt?

A dome for a view. A yurt for a cosier, more traditional feel and straight walls to put furniture against.

A yurt has upright lattice walls and a skylight in the centre. A dome curves from the floor up and puts a big window on one side. If you're comparing the two, our NZ yurt price guide lists every yurt price, and our NZ guide to yurts explains how a yurt is built.

What base does a dome need?

A solid, level deck or base. It isn't in the kit.

Speak to us about our deck plans and design advice. Plan the base around where the panoramic window will face.

Are domes used for glamping in NZ?

Yes, and the view is usually why. If that's your plan, read starting a glamping business in New Zealand before you buy, and check our NZ consents guide for what to ask your council.
