What yurts are for sale in NZ?

We sell two ranges in New Zealand: ORON yurts and Geodesic Domes. ORON is our premium yurt, with a heavier timber frame, hardwood doors and windows, wool felt insulation and a hemp-cotton liner. Geo Domes are the choice when the view is the whole point.

People use them as a sleepout for the kids or guests, a studio on a lifestyle block, an extra room at the bach, or a glamping stay that pays its way. One of our hospitality clients, Wildwood Eco Retreat, runs four 8m ORONs for guests, which tells you how well they hold up to steady use.

What's included in a yurt kit, and what isn't?

The kit is the yurt itself, ready to stand on your deck. What it doesn't include is the deck, flooring, fit-out, plumbing, electrical or installation. Plan for those from day one so your budget doesn't get a surprise later.

My family and I lived off-grid for four years in an 8m yurt on a friend's farm before we started Yurt in the Dirt. The biggest lesson was that the yurt is only half the job. The deck under it and the way you heat it decide how good it feels to live in.

How does a yurt get to New Zealand?

Your kit comes by sea into the port of Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Our licensed customs broker handles the clearance, so you're not dealing with paperwork at the wharf. From the port, final delivery to your section or block is quoted separately, or you can collect it yourself.

We don't give delivery timings in our guides because sailings vary. When you order, we'll keep you posted at each step.

Will a yurt handle New Zealand weather?

Yes, if you set it up for your spot. NZ throws wind, heavy rain and cold southern winters at you, sometimes all at once, and each one asks something different of the yurt.

Wool felt insulation inside an ORON yurt
  • Wind. Tie the deck down properly, keep the cover tensioned and face the door away from the prevailing wind. Exposed coastal sections and windy spots like Wellington deserve extra care with the anchoring.
  • Rain. The outer cover hangs over the edge of the deck to shed water, which is why the deck must be the same diameter as the yurt, never bigger. If it joins a larger deck, raise the yurt circle or leave a 10 to 20mm gap.
  • Southern winters. For Canterbury, Otago or Southland, we'd add double wool felt and plan a wood burner or heat pump. We lived through four winters in ours, and good insulation made all the difference.

The yurt platform guide walks through the deck step by step, and how to build a yurt covers the frame and cover.

What should you check before you buy a yurt in NZ?

Check four things before you pay a deposit: the size against your site, the full cost beyond the kit, how it gets to you, and what the warranty covers. Those four answer most of the questions we get from NZ buyers.

  1. Size. Mark the circle out on your section with string. A 6m feels cosy, an 8m feels like a room with space to move.
  2. Full cost. Add the deck, flooring, fit-out, plumbing, electrical and installation to the kit price.
  3. Getting it there. Which port suits you, and whether you'll collect or have it delivered.
  4. Warranty. Ours is 3 years on the frame and cover against defects in materials and workmanship.

Also check your local rules for how you can use a yurt on your land before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yurt cost in NZ?

Our ORON yurt kits are $17,890 to $39,890 NZD ex GST, and Geo Domes $17,990 to $32,990 for standard sizes, as at October 2026. Larger domes can be made on request. The deck, flooring, fit-out and services are extra.

Which ports do you ship to in New Zealand?

Kits arrive by sea into Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Our licensed customs broker clears them, then final delivery is quoted separately or you can self-collect.

How long do yurts last?

On our kits the frame, doors and windows are expected to last 15+ years, and the outer cover around 7 years. The cover can be replaced without touching the frame.

Are there bathrooms in yurts?

Not in the kit. Plumbing isn't included, so most people build a small bathroom close by or have a plumber fit one inside.

Can a yurt handle New Zealand wind?

Yes, when it's anchored to a solid deck and the cover is kept tensioned. Exposed sites need extra care with the tie-downs.

Are your NZ prices in NZD?

Yes. Prices are in NZD excluding GST, and we invoice New Zealand buyers in NZD with GST added.
